Syringa-vulgaris-mrs-edward-hardingMay’s plant of the month is Syringa vulgaris or the common lilac. Syringa are deciduous shrubs or trees, with simple leaves and conical panicles of small, very fragrant,  tubular white, pink or purple flowers in late spring or early summer.  They like full sun, any aspect, in a sheltered or exposed situation.  They prefer well-drained soil. They need plenty of space growing up to 4m in height and spread.  An ideal shrub for borders and beds, as cut flowers or to screen areas. Looks good in a city or courtyard gardens with a cottage or informal style.
